|

Hi,
I've just recently purchased a One IQ Europe Edition TomTom and after installing Speed Cameras, POI's, Voices and Car symbols etc I have some corrupted files on the device...
As you can see the top file is 3.99 GB in size and the unit is only holds 2GB.
I did back up the device using HOME but when I try to restore it now it says 'No backups available'
I've made a folder on my laptop called TomTom and copied all the files from the device into this folder apart from the corrupted files.
I've tried to delete or rename the corrupted files but I get the message 'The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name'
I've tried to change the extension to .bmp .dat .mp3 etc etc so I could try and delete it then but it doesn't let me and still gives the above error.
When I try to back up the device using Home it fails and lists these files as the problem...
'ERROR: DesktopLib/FileCopy/Error: An error occurred. Unable to create the files required to copy this item to your computer.
@ .\controller\FileCopyThread.cpp(137)

My TomTom seems to still be working but is there any way to remove these corrupted files?
Could I format the drive using Windows Explorer and then copy the files I have copied back into the device?
These are the files I have copied...
I'm just worried I have a missing file etc and won't allow the TomTom to run after I format it and replace these files.
I've just looked at the folder again and I now have 18 corrupted files instead of the 5 which I first had!
Also when I try to back up the device using Home
Any help appreciated,
Thanks |

Use Windows Explorer to locate the device, it will have its own drive letter, right click the drive letter and select Format" don't select the "Quick format" option.
Once this is complete copy your Windows Explorer back up to the device, when its complete find the icon bottom right on the PC to do with disconnecting USB devices and make sure you use this to terminate the USB connection BEFORE pulling the lead out of the TomTom - Mike |

The latest ONEs seem quite prone to this....
I've had something very similar, same sort of daft names and sizes of over 4GB shown on a device with nothing like that amount of memory!
Thankfully, it doesn't seem like any "genuine" files get corrupted, these are just "extras" getting generated.
I found it required a complete reformat and restore of a backup too, but if you haven't got a backup, you can usually do it by backing up the existing folders and files one by one, ignoring any that won't copy, then formatting and restoring the stuff you backed up. |

Well, the other instances showed screenshots of actual corrupted file names, rather than a purported corruption within a file.
In other words.... I don't know... _________________ David |

Thanks for all the help.
Formatting the device and then putting the files back onto it seemed to fix it.
Thanks again

So the moral of the story seems to be...
1. The "corrupted files" ARE all 'ghost' files and the real files are still OK, but the presence of the corrupted stuff prevents making or restoring entire backups in one go by normal Windows copy and paste.
When you make a backup, check it to see the contents look right and match the original file listing.
2. When you find this corruption of the ONE, you need to reformat to get rid of it
3. You can always copy and paste stuff bit by bit to restore things to the way they were. |
