(Adding to my own message) I am also pondering just "embedding" the charger, perhaps soldering wires to the existing cigarette charger interface and using that instead. In my old car, I used a free lighter-socket that I wired inside the panel, but sometimes it would blow the fuse if knocked. Soldering it would eliminate that problem, and be cheaper.
So thoughts on alternatives are welcome! |

Go to Maplins and purchase a spare ciggy lighter socket and wire that to the fuse box or tag it to the car stereo power cables as these are fuse protected. Insert the existing charger to the new socket, tape it up with PVC tape and bury it all behind the dash - neat and safe, cost of the ciggy socket is only a couple of quid - Mike
Edit Once to add This Link which shows you whats needed, it also contains a link to the thread about the iO-Play which the OP might find of use - Mike |

I think you are right - that's the best course of action. TVM. |

Just to complete this, all went pretty well and the TomTom PSU is now "embedded" along with the ioPlay.
One slight problem in that I got slightly confused when getting the cigarette lighter fixing wired in. I had bought a transparent one from Halfords, and "read" it as the same as a circuit diagram. Anyway, positive was negative, and the TT PSU decided not to work after being plugged in! Quick trip to Halfords for another and a reversal of wires and all is well... |

Its a bit late for this now for for the benefit of anyone reading this threader later on the ciggy socket should be wired:
center pip is +12V
Outer barrel is negative
You were lucky all it blew was the car charger, what do think of the iO unit now you have it in the vehicle? - Mike |

The ioPlay is really nice. Only used it with the iPhone so far. Plus the fact that it allows me anything at all is good as the radio code in the handbook turns out not to work, so that's not so helpful! |
