My Windows XP Pro PC doesn't like the map installer that comes with TomTom 3.
The application installed fine onto my 3950 Ipaq.

However when I try to install a map from the CD, about 1/2 way through, I get a massive crash (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) and have to reset the PC which by the way hasn't crashed for over a year.

So I tried unplugging my Viking 256Mb SD card and installing directly using a Multicrd reader ----- same result, system crashes with above error.

In the end I resorted to copying the map (108Mb) to my harddrive and copying it to the SD card using Windows Explorer. However this wasn't plain sailing as TomTom refused to recognise the map at first. Eventually it did however and now everything is working fine.

Looking at the evidence I definitely think the problem lies with the installer used by TomTom.

regards

This forum really isn't the right place for a tutorial on analysing Windows crashdumps, but the other information with the STOP error might well give you information on exactly what blew up. If you pushed the button to send the data to Microsoft after you rebooted (which you should, if you were offered it), it would be analysed for you.

If you look through the System Event Log (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, System) and look for an event from 'Save Dump', then PM or email me the information you found there, I may be able to throw a little more light.

Copying the maps directly to the Pocket PC via ActiveSync may be troublesome - ActiveSync can go wrong when copying large files, like the largest files in the map folders, especially if it's not running via a network connection to the Pocket PC.

The problem with your card reader is harder to explain - all I can say is that it worked fine for me (Windows XP Pro SP1, ACPI multiprocessor kernel, dual 2.66GHz Xeon processors in a Dell Precision 650 with hyperthreading off, Belkin F5U248 USB 8 in 1 card reader, Norton AntiVirus 2003 Professional, ActiveSync 3.7).

Thanks for the reply David, I'll look into the screen dump and see what they say.
The on-line crash analysed a "driver problem" but was unable to give any more information.

Jusy one question, how does TomTom know where the sotrage maps are located? I'd have expected to see an option to specify exactly where the maps are located.

cheers
Brett

The maps always go in <map name> Navigator Map in the root directory of whatever location you choose. So, if you install the Great_Britain map into a storage card, the various files go into a folder called Great_Britain Navigator Map in the root directory of the storage card.

As a result, the installer just needs to know where you want the map stored - whether that be a storage card or in your Pocket PC's main memory.
