My brothers XL has begun randomly switching itself on.

I have been in contact with Tomtom support who thought it maybe a corrupt file and they advised a program reinstall after formating the unit, this I have done but the problem has appeared again.

The unit is running the latest version 8.010 the only other update to it is the new UK map under the map update service.

Anyone else had the same problem and can offer some advise.

Have you tried all the usual things like a system reset and a return to factory settings?
I've done a list of the basic things to try HERE.

Thanks Andy I have followed the steps as under

1. To do a simple program re-boot or "soft reset":
Yes this was the first thing I got him to do before I started the procedure

2. Using The Clear Flash tool:
Yes this was part of the tomtom support answer

3. Windows Disk Error Checking & 4. DOS disk checking
I did a full format as per tomtom support answer when doing this no error was reported.

5. To perform a Factory Reset and a battery reset:
This is one thing I did not do, I have not got the XL with me at the moment, I shall have to talk him through it.

Do you think point 5 will still be necessary after doing a full system install as per tomtom support instructions? Question

No... Sad
Those were the things I though worth trying before going onto the more major steps of reinstalling software and finally a full reformat and reinstall.
If you've done that, I'm stumped.

The electronics engineer bit of me says "As the 'power' button is just telling the system to go into a sleep mode, then a bit of electrical noise on a data line could be registered as a button press".

But it also says "I wouldn't know how to fix that!"

My ONE v4 did this once back in Jan this year. I had not updated the unit or anything else. I had been out for the day and when I came back it was just sitting there all lite up on the nav screen. On checking the battery info screen the batt was about half used, so must have been on for about say 1 hour.

I did a soft reset and recharged the unit. So far it has not done it again.

This problem was also affecting the 920 some time back, a way to reduce the power ups was to use the "Clear Route" function prior to switching it off, no way to know if this will halp out for the XL issue but its worth trying - Mike

I think I shall now get him to do this again.

I always use the clear route on my device I will have to check that he is also doing this.

He does subscribe to the traffic service and on two occasions it did cost two amounts in excess of 50p to his phone tariff, so maybe he did not use clear route, in the meantime I have advised him to disable bluetooth until he needs the traffic service.

Thanks for all your input

I have not experienced this on the TT but I have seen this on a PDA and a laptop on using a bluetooth phone as a modem. If the bluetooth connection did not clear, the devices would not go into standby. This may not affect the TT, but it might be an area to look at.
