I purchased a tomtom 1 v3 recently which was a refubished item which I believe could have been several years old. However, when I plugged the device into PC I was still offered the latest free maps from TomTom website and downloaded them plus the latest application which took a 1.5 hours download on broadband! I didn't even need to use my code numbers in the box to download. My question is, How does tomtom website know if you are entitled to the maps which have to be downloaded within 30days?

Sounds like a case where the Latest Map Guarantee worked as it was designed!

I believe that when the device is powered up for the very first time, it creates a 'birthday' file which TT Home recognises. It used this file to work out when the 30th day for the LMG is.

Hope this helps.

So, if I wished to buy a new tomtom from my local Halfords and they were to show me how it worked, would the 'birthday' file be created then? If so, if I didn't want to buy after all then presumably it would have to go back to tomtom, reset and resold as refurbished. Perhaps that explains why there are so many tomtom refurbished for sale.

Possibly. I don't know how the 'demonstration and set up' works in these stores. If they did it on the unit you bought, then yes the birthday file would be created on start-up.

Although, in some cases where a refurb unit has been bought and the LMG hasn't been accepted by TT Home, TT customer support have sometimes used a copy of a dated receipt to prove date of purchase.

As i've never had a new unit 'set up' for me, i'm not sure of the procedure. Do they demo it on an existing unit, then once you have paid for a brand new one, set up that one for you?

Usually a dated receipt is enough for TT support to allow the LMG to be honoured.

No, iv'e never had a new unit set up for me either. Maybe there is a demo unit instore so that the new packaging is left sealed and intact on the one you may wish to purchase. All seems a lot clearer now. Thanks Smile

This is one theory, another is that the 30 days starts when the device is first connected to a PC. I've never seen any definate evidence as to which is correct (If either of them is)

On the x40 range it is when it is first turned on as it connects itself to the TT Servers using its internal mobile.

In the US, refurbished TT PND's don't qualify for LMG. There are a limited number of promo packages with a certificate for the latest map, but in general, no matter how hard you complain, no LMG on refurbs.

When we talk about refurbs, are we talking about a tomtom refurb? Is it only tomtom themselves who can refurb these so then they qualify for free maps/updates. Often felt a little wary about buying a new unit from say Ebay in case there is no free upgrade of maps for some reason. However, i did but from Totalpda Ltd, who carry refurbs for free upgrades. Does tomtom have a place they refurb in the US? If not, then I can understand that the refurbs would only be European based.

I don't know that there's any way to determine if a refurb is originating from TT NA or TT Europe. But I don't think it matters really. They have a different policy on North American refurb sales. Yes, they have been honoring refurb LMG in Europe, but not for North America.

In the same boat as anything else you buy from eBay - let the buyer beware! You may get a bargain, but you might be sold a pup...

I heard of someone who bought a Microsoft "X Box Box" once.
A lovely picture of the packaging, and that's all he got! Served him right for assuming the double "box" was a misprint.

Incidentally, TotalPDA used to deny that you got an LMG with the refurbs they sold, but there was a free map deal which accounted to exactly the same thing...
