I backed up my current version and also took a second copy of the mapsettings.cfg file. I then successfully installed the latest maps, 8.25, on my 940. When I restarted my 940 it no longer asked for a password which I find strange as I had only updated the maps. I then reconnected to my computer. Made a copy of the latest mapsettings.cfg which came with the new maps and then replaced it with the old copy so I could get all my favourites back. After disconnecting from the PC I could not start the 940, kept going to the start-up screen then shutting down then back to the start up screen in an endless loop. Even a reset made no difference, I could not even switch it off. I reconnected and tried again copying another copy of the mapsettings.cfg, in case the first was somehow corrupted, directly from my backup directory, same problem. I finally had to put the new mapsettings.cfg back and all was then OK. So I now have to input all my favourites manually. Does anybody have any clues what could be happening and why I should loose may password setup?

Have a read of #15 on the FAQ page which can be found Here I appreciate it says it is for a different device but it will cure your problem and from now on I wouldn't use the useless Favourites option other than a very short term temporary storage area. Use of Custom POI Categories is far more flexible in use and doesn't suffer issues when software/ maps change - Mike

Had the same with my 940 also.

It is caused by copying a previous mapsettings.cfg file to the TomTom, as you say. Taking it out of the tomtom solved it for me.
