Hi, im currently working on a student project to provide a back up for GPS when it loses signal e.g in forests, urban areas or tunnels.

I was wondering how badly signal loss actually affects your GPS system when driving? and would you consider buying a slightly more expensive GPS system that would eliminate the problem of signal loss?

I would really appreciate some comments about this,

Cheers Exclamation

There are already solutions available which 'maintain' a moving signal for a while when the actual GPS signal is lost (I believe it uses estimations based on speeds prior to the signal being lost). TBH I believe this kind of coding based signals should be on all satnav software. It shouldn't be too hard to code for the software guys.

Where you looking at something other than this kind of signal maintenance? Before giving an answer to what kind of premium I would pay, I would need more of an idea what was being done and how accurate it is.

We are looking at potentially using eLoran (an upgrade of LORAN-C) as a back up to GPS, because it is a ground based signal it can be used for accurate postioning of 9m, in dense foliage, urban areas and in tunnels.

In our project we are looking at implementing an eLoran reciever into exsisting GPS systems to provide accurate positioning when GPS isnt available.

Systems like the Garmin 7500 use sensors connected to the vehicles electrics to get extra data, speed, reverse even, etc.

Sure there are others with gyro sensors to help with loss of signal.
