Hi,
As part of my regular backup program, I decided to back up my TomTom 730T to a folder on my PC. Unfortunately I got the following message:
Cannot copy gnsdata: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
In the 730T there is a folder called:
gns
This contains the two files:
gnsdata
TmcEApi.so
Does anybody know the function of these files and folder?
Can I just replace the gnsdata file with a previous version of the backup or should I replace the whole folder, i.e. gns?
Unfortunately, whilst I do a regular backup of my TomTom 730T to my PC, I don’t have a backup program for the PC and last week the hard drive died. I have had a new hard drive installed with the operating system and I am now gradually rebuilding the PC with my programs. I am also investigating avenues for data recovery of my old hard drive.
In the meantime, I have access to a second TomTom 730T, can I copy the gnsdata file from the other 730T or should I copy the whole folder, i.e. gns from the other 730T?
Is the gnsdata file necessary, i.e. can I delete it without any problems, and if so will it be recreated?
I think that it’s to do with RDS-TMC, which is currently causing the whole 730T to freeze so I’m currently running the unit without connecting the RDS-TMC.

From time to time the GNS data file won't delete and the only option then is to format the device (DennisN has experianced this at least once) - far from ideal.
Make a fresh backup of the device using the new PC just in case although only the map folder is required - all the other files and folders can be copied from the other 730 if need be.
If nothing else this adds further weight to the Back up the device and make a copy of the data on DVD/ removable media, hard drive failure or a PC fail can have costly implications - Mike
