It works in exactly the same way as the x20/ x30 units in this respect.
Make sure you have a computer voice selected then you can type the POI warning when setting up the Warn When Near POI options - Mike |

- Manage POIs
- Change preferences
- Warn when near POI
- Choose your POI
- Select Warning distance
- Choose 'Type in your own warning'
Just tried it on my 940 and it works? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Is this using the Speed Camera database from PocketGPSWorld or using the Safety Cameras supplied with the device? - Mike |

You cannot use the Text To Speech for the built in TomTom supplied database, what you can do is either record your own warning or save a warning you want to use as a wav file and put it in the Sounds folder on the device. Once the file is in the Sounds folder it can be selected when you configure the warnings for the built in cameras.
This provides far less options than with the normal POI files which as you know can use the TTS system of ogg audio files - Mike |

I used the services of a free "Text to Speech" website. I entered the text for each of the Tomtom safety cameras, e.g. "Fixed Safety Camera, Ungated Railway Crossing", then saved the .wav files. These files were then transferred to the Sounds folder on my device and linked to the individual cameras using the "Change Warning Preferences" tab within TomTom Safety Cameras.
One point to remember when using these sites (most are American) is that the word "MOBILE" is pronounced "MOBEEL" so I changed the spelling to "MOBYLE" to achieve the desired result.
Once on my device, I found that the warnings were not as loud as the ones generated by the PGPSW files so I used Nero Wave Editor to increase the volume and now they work a treat! |

Another way is to use the device itself to play the spoken alert whilst sending the audio out through the line out socket straight into the PC's sound card. This way you get the spoken alerts in the same voice that the device uses for navigation - messy though to produce a full set, but it can be done - Mike |

I use the pocketgpsworld cameras but I rename the files to names such as "20 mph gatso.ov2" and select brief announcement in the POI warning options and the unit will then say on approaching a camera "20 miles per hour gatso 200 yards" using its text to voice (yes it reads out mph as miles per hour). If you use long announcement it also tells you the distance to the next nearest similar camera that may not be on your route.
As there are 60 PocketGPS files to rename, I wrote a simple batch file to run everytime there is an update.
Another point is that if you try to set up POI warnings when the unit is connected to Home on the PC, the voice options are not shown. |
