ADMIN edit: Discussion spilt from x40 launch thread here
The new TomTom range is now on the TomTom website! Looks like 930 is discontinued?
If anyone knows of any stores that have this item in stock, please let me know |

They may have them on show but they don't sell at these events. _________________ Darren Griffin |

From vendors yes, not from TomTom. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Just an heads up - the add on receiver is now listed as an accesory for the X20 and X30 ranges on the TomTom UK pages
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Language=1&query=live&FID=9603
Oddly though I've now seen close up pictures and it appears to have a full size USB connector not miniusb - this would mean a convertor would have to be used or some other kludge.

The image isn't very clear but it is mini-USB. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Not looking very likely that the x40s will be retail this weekend as the online versions of their stores (e.g. PC World, Currys, Halfords) are not showing stock yet, and distribution always goes via their central warehousing rather than straight to shops.
So I am thinking that message may have bene a bit optimistic. |

Yeah it doesn't look like it will be this weekend. I asked Halfords and they said it will be a while before it goes from distributors to warehouse, and then head office to make the decision to send it to the stores or whatever.
I asked Dabs, they said they expect stock on the Monday coming.
Handtec says between now and Monday.
I'm still going to give retailers a try this weekend just in case. But if anyone has spotted a place in stock then feel free to let me know.
And finally, as Darren stated, can those concerned about the HD traffic addon stick to the dedicated thread about the addon? |

Handtec started showing stock, strangely after 4pm, which is when their cutoff for next day delivery is. So I called them, and they told me things like "its at another warehouse", so it will go out on Monday for delivery Tuesday......
Sounds to me like they know for sure they will get stock from the distributor on Monday, but wanted to show they had stock now! |

TomTom have never been very good when it comes to customer services and this goes back to the days of Navigator V1.
All companies need to develop new products but I think TomTom made a mistake and should not have rushed out the x30 range, instead they should of just released the x40 range. All the x30 functionallity should have been released as just an update... but its always easy to be wise after the event.
TomTom will start to confuse new customers, as they have far too many different products One's, XL's, x30 and now x40 and this is only going to grow. The x40 range will only have a 6 month life span as TomTom will be under presure to release new products at next years CeBit.
So in summary I think the x30 range should not have been released, HD looks like its available in the UK, and I suspect that the x40 range will not sell due to the high costs.
Compare the cost of an x40 with a 3G laptop, PCWorld (UK) are giving these laptops away free when you take out a subscription. So why cann't TomTom subsidise their hardware in a similar way?

Ahh... it's only available in the "United Kingdome"... somewhere else entirely!
One question about that chart (I'm not very clued-up on TMC). ...
Is it really true that the USB receiver works with the x30 models but not the x20s? |

I have the older oval shaped RDS-TMC and that works with both the 720 and the 930, the newer USB RDS-TMC also works with both devices, so I guess they missed a tick off that line on the chart.
And they both work with the One Third Edition so thats another tick missing.
A word of warning though concerning the HD Receiver, it is locked to the country of issue so if you purchase it in Holland and bring it to the UK don't expect it to work, only HD receivers sold in this country (when / if they are made available) will work in the UK - Mike |
