Press and hold the power switch until the unit re-boots, this can take 30 to 50 seconds, when you hear the drum roll you have reset the device - does it boot up following this? - Mike |

If you have a backup of the device please re-install this, if not you can try the following:
Connect the PC, Shut down TomTom Home and start up Windows Explorer - Copy all the files and folders to your PC to create a backup of the device even though it won't boot up.
Next use Windows Explorer to open the drive letter associated with your TomTom and delete the loose files in the root of the directory -
DO NOT DELETE ANY FOLDERS OR FILES WITHIN FOLDERS
Start TomTom Home on the PC and let it find the device, now select Update device, this will download and update the software files on the device, once done the unit should boot up and work correctly - Mike |

Backup is easier on a Mac.
Turn off TT Home!!
New folder on desktop.
Connect tomtom to computer. Double click icon on desktop to open.
Select all and drag everything to the new folder on your computer.
When you've done that ( a few minutes to copy) come back and tell us what files and folders you have. We'll see if anything is missing. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

Do you have any earlier backup that you did with TT Home (or anything else - Time Capsule???). If you haven't got a copy of a map, you could be in difficulty. You may need to go to TomTom and try and get another copy of the map from them. Needs proof of purchase etc. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

Exchange...
You took the words right out of my mouth!
When you get the new one, do the full backup to the desktop as soon as you switch it on!! After that it can be restored whenever you want to "start again".....
And one other thing... never unplug the Tomtom from the computer without ejecting the tomtom drive (drag the icon across the desktop to the Trash) _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

what icon do you refer to?
& I take it yr a mac user? How easy is it to do the backup .. & how do I back it up to the desktop?? These may sound basic questions but when it comes to computers; I aint got a clue |

I doubt you'll get an exchange, or at least dont mention that youve added voices etc to the unit. They will blame the fault on your actions and will most likely be unwilling to exchange the unit. _________________ TomTom One XL App 8.201, 8GB Class 6 SDHC (BootLoader 5.022) x40 Emulation

If you got an exchange unit. Here's the basic backup.
Quit all your open applications.
You will now only see the desktop. Menu along the top says Finder File ...
Click on "File" and then choose "New Folder" from the drop down menu.
A New Folder will appear on the desktop It will be called "Untitled". You can change the name to what ever you like. And put it where you like.
Then connect your Tomtom to the computer and turn the Tomtom on.
You should get a message on the TomTom screen that says "Connect to computer?". Touch the "Yes" button.
Go back and look at your computer. You should see a new drive appear on the screen. It might be called "NO NAME" or "TOMTOM" or something similar.
Double click on the new drive picture (the icon) and it will open as a new window.
Select all the items in the window (Command key + A)
Click on these selected files and folders and hold down the key. Drag them to the New Folder you made earlier. (or choose Copy, then open the new folder and choose paste.)
It will take a few minutes to copy all the files from the TomTom to the new folder on the desktop.
Finally, as a check, click on the New Folder to select it. Then from the drop down menu under "File" choose "Get Info". A new window will appear. One of the items is "size". See what the size of your new folder is.
Then close the Tomtom window. Click once on the TOMTOM icon (or NO NAME or whatever it's called) and do the "Get Info" again for this. Again look for the size. It should be the same as the size of your backup. If it's not, you will have done something wrong....(a very small difference in the sizes should be OK, as the two units are formatted slightly differently - but it should be close.). _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)
