USB Charging

I have a 760T which comes with cradle and cable with charger and tmc aerial and works fine, but does anyone know if I take the Nuvi into another vehicle, without the cradle cable, (don't really want to unwire this), how can I use the usb cable.

I have tried it using a cig lighter to usb adapter and it does charge, but the Nuvi immediately goes into 'link to PC' mode, so can't navigate when plugged in.

The work around is to charge the NUVI, on mains or via car, but use it on battery only, as per other thread I now remember that I should turn off bluetooth, dim screen etc, but will this give enough power for a journey, going to Spain so will get lost without GPS !

OR is there anyway to stop NUVI going into connection mode on USB cable and just charge/operate off car battery ? Any ideas gratefully received.
