Mio 168 Madness - can you help ?

my dad's Mio 168 appears no longer able to find satellites

history:
it was working fine until he broke the charge connector
this was professionally repaired
the device lay unused for 2 months

software (tom Tom) was reinstalled - had been working fine before

the settings for Tom Tom are fine

other NMEA - 4800 baud - SP2 which is the Mio 168 setting I believe

it's been saying 'No valid GPS signal' and 'waiting for a valid GPS signal' in spite of having been taken outside with no obstacles to find a satellite in the Tom Tom configure mode

the little circular blue/yellow dial spins...

the clock shows how long it's been searching...

after 2 hours of this I want to smash it to bits

what if anything can I do to establish whether or not the GPS functionality is still working ?
