Any thoughts why unit will not boot up. Green light comes on when pluged into mains or car but will not start up. Tried resetting for up to 1min 30sec, held the on key for up to 5 secs. Unit went down on friends half way through their holiday in the states. Did a serch to no avail. Is this the end of this Classic. Thanks, Mike |

If you were using the original car charger, then this is a case of the well known design fault that has killed countless Go's.
Give tomtom a call and see if they will replace it as this situation is covered by your consumer rights for upto 6 years. |

Or if they weren't using the original charger, did they accidentally use one meant for something else, that stuffed more than the allowed 5 Volts up the Go? |

The battery dying would have given a few early warnings of impending doom.
Is there a smell of melted plastic about the old Go ?
Can you check the voltage output of the charger ? if it's over 5 volts then that is the culprit.
The design fault is that in the chargers lead, there is a status wire that reports the voltage. It breaks, causing the unit to not get any info and so it increases the voltage until it does get a signal.. which never comes... and poor old tomtom gets a 12 volt shock.
Oddly the green LED is on a circuit that can handle 12 volts and so it stays lit. |

Don't think that usually stops it working while on the power supply.
Do you by any chance have access to a voltmeter?
The voltage between the inner and outer connections on the power plug should be no more than 5V D.C. |

Thanks for the help. Put a voltmeter on the car charger lead and it reads 5volts, and no the unit does not smell of burning. Regards Mike. |

OK, looks like we were heading off in the wrong direction....
When you try to switch t on do you get *any* signs of life apart from the green led? Any backlight on the screen? Any faint whistle or whine?
If you do, does anything happen if you switch it on while connected to a running PC via USB? |

Hi Andy, Thanks for your time. No not a glimmer or sound , just the green light on when plugged into mains or car, but no green light when plugged into the USB port. regards, Mike. |

The USB port on the 'classic' is data only, there is no power via the USB.
Have you tried putting external power in, and then after a few minutes of charging, press the reset button and then the power on for 5 seconds whilst still connected to power.
You probably have , but if the battery got really flat it usually will not restart without a good kick! |
