iv got a navman 3000 with ipaq, and usually it takes a while to lock onto the satelites. iv only just got the navman jacket so have been playing around with the software etc in the house, as i managed to destroy my gearbox in the car a couple of weeks back Sad

Anyway usually to get a lock i have to virtually hang out the window as we have a roof that overhangs a bit.

iv just noticed that the ipaq, which is sat on my bed metres from the window with the curtains closed has locked onto 6 satelites. doesnt seem right, as it usually takes a while to get a lock even when im near the window or outside.

bit new to this so just slap me if im talking gibberish hehe.

cheers

Getting a lock with 6 sats is very unusual inside unless you have a newer GPS like the Emtac/Socket BT GPS with extra sensitivity. Navman sleeves are usually the last ones that would be able to achieve this, unless you have the new 3450 sleeve with the external antenna socket in which case it's entirely possible.

The important thing to remember is that it is a lot more difficult to get the inital lock than it is to reaquire the signal if the GPS has already locked on to the satelite in the past few hours. Try taking your GPS outside and walk around until it has had a chance to lock on to all the visible satelites (not necessarily all at the same time!).

Now go back inside and hold your GPS very still and wait a couple of minutes. Depending on the sensitivity of the receiver it may lock on to some of the satelites again.

I tried this with my Garmin receiver and I had 7 satelites showing on it while inside my house. This was while standing on the upstairs landing, holding the GPS very still above my head for a couple of minutes. The signal was pretty weak but it was there. My house is a brick semi-detached with a slate roof.
