Hi Guys,

Great forum!!

I have just recieved an etrex venture GPS for my birthday(slightly early) and have been browsing this site to see what I can do with it! I know othat the GPS can have POI uploaded to it using the Garmin softare.
I see discsussions on the POI forum about having locations for petrol stations fast food restaurants etc. - My question is they all seem to talk about TomTom, with regards to the POI, wilkl this work with any other type of GPS setup.

My father is going to give me his Ipaq 3630, as hes upgraded and i will be buying the data connection lead for the gps, will this be an alternative????

Thanks for your help!

Mark

It really depends on what you want. If you're looking for full colour street maps with POI's then TomTom Navigator on an iPAQ connected via a data cable to the eTrex would be the best way.

You can download POI's to Garmin's but you need to have them set as waypoints and there's no easy way of labelling them. There are free third party applications that will help you convert POI's/waypoints and send them to the Garmin.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the prompt respose. No, i'm not looking into a system such as tomtom, i'm more trying to see how i can enhance the system I have.
As to the reply you sent, TomTom navigator, is that a software app, as i thought that TomTom was all hardware systems?

As to downloading the waypoints onto the garmin, i know that you can name various waypoints, so it is something to play with - I'll have a look at your downloads section and see what i can find.

Once again thanks for your help

Sparky

TomTom Navigator (1,2,3) is software, but TomTom do sell their own GPS's which are basically in most cases a re-badge of a Leadtek (although sometimes in a newer design).

TomTom offer a cabled mouse setup (9531/9532/9533) and a Bluetooth GPS setup. You can purchase these as bundles, or you can just purchase the software alone, you don't say where you are in your profile so I can't really give you any prices but you can find these out on the TomTom website by changing the country to the one you're in.
