We see mention of the relative advantages of NavTeq v TeleAtlas but I don't recall ever seeing a report on how the data produced by the Mapping suppliers is used by different manufacturers.
My current Navman F20 is not as good at producing routes as my earlier Co-pilot on an Ipaq.
I don't think I can write off TeleAtlas on this experience as I don't think Navman have used all the available data and I think have also produced a cut down operating system for this low end model.
I would be interested to see how different manufactures use the same basic data on their products.
I know this is a major task and I would be pleased to assist in any testing.
I also live in Chelmsford.

Recently, one of the guys here posted an article The making of Navteq Maps: Onboard with the survey team which gives a good overview of what happens behind the scenes. TeleAtlas would follow fairly much the same processes.

Both firms capture more data than you see on the satnav devices. Companies can buy as little or as much of this data as they need for their devices.

Both NavTeq and TeleAtlas have good and bad points which can vary from country to country and even area to area within a country.

If you are looking for a new unit, pop along to a retailer (eg Halford) and have a play on different units. Often it's the software that makes the different and not the mapping behind it.

while it WOULD be interesting, i doubt that manufacturers would be willing to discuss their routing algorithms with the general public...
