Hi,

First of all you should know that I have no experience with either the Pocket PC 2003 Premium operating system or any GPS device.

Please bear this in mind in any response as I will need every step explained.

I live in Santa Cruz California and purchased the ipac 2210 and Pocket Xtrack with the idea that I could use it for hikes into the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The Pocket Xtrack came without instructions or software of any kind. I have been unable to find any installation instructions on their website and they have not answered my email enquiries.

When I put the cf unit in my ppc I get a message that says "This modem has no connections" then a choice of either "internet", "work", or "dismise". I tried a soft reset a few times (like I found advised in the forums here) and now this message no longer comes up.

However -- I cannot find any GPS functions or any reference to the receiver anywhere on my ppc.

I am at a total loss as to how to proceed. Do I need software on my ppc? I downloaded a file from the fortuna site (I guess it is a driver -- they didn't say) I don't know what to do with it, as I don't know how to find the "add new hardware feature" of the operating system.

I can't believe a company would sell such an expensive item without providing even the most rudimentary documentation for the consumer.

Perhaps someone would be kind enough to provide me with some step by step guidance?
TIA,
Robert Maurer

Robert,

welcome to the forum.

If you want to use the device for hiking, then you will need topographical maps. For example www.maptech.com offer a range of maps, also for your area.

Once you have installed these maps (and the map viewer application) you can then access the GPS from that map viewer. You can set the connection speed and the communication port so that the data from the reciever can be fed into the viewer.

Without a GPS application your Fortuna is pretty useless. You may want to try installing a diagnostics tool (like WinFast Navigator - in our Downloads section) to see if your GPS is working at all. But for real world use you need the maps and the map viewer.

Hope this helps,

By the way, it's "iPAQ" and "Pocket XTrac" ;-)

lbendlin,

Thanks -- I will do what you said. I am going to try to use the evaluation mode of Memory Map. Do you think this will be a good one or should I try a different one?

Memory Map is UK/Europe only. You need to go to MapTech. Same product, but USGS maps.
