Mainly 2 reasons.
1. HOME has a habit of not Backing Up everything. If a file gives an error, HOME will sometimes just ignore the error, not copy the file, and won't tell you.
2. As Home stands at the moment, it will only record one Backup. If you make another, it will overwrite the first.
If Explorer finds an error the process always stops, with an error message. _________________ Richard

Hi Paul80
Oldboy has given you the reasons for using Windows Explorer instead of ‘Home’ and I agree 100%.
The fact that ‘Home’ overwrites its previous backup is a real cock-up. On the other hand Windows lets you make as many backups as you wish and that reason alone is enough to convince me that it is the right way to go.
For instance I have the first backup that I made soon after opening the box, one before downloading Navcore 8 and one after downloading Navcore 8. There is plenty of room on one’s computer to do the backups and having the backups means that one will never be stuck. Treat ‘Home’ the same way as you would the Bubonic plague. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

On previous editions of Tomtom home did Home not overwrite previous back ups as I am sure that for my older Tomtom 500 I have several back ups saved on my computer and these were done by Tomtom home |

Its true that older versions of Home did allow you to make as many backups you wanted so I don't know why other than those backups were always considered to be flaky, they did not continue the feature onward into the latest versions. The current version appears to do an instant backup I assume once it has been started it continues in the background does anyone know? |

A few more things against it...
1. Certainly old versions used to miss out whole chunks of what it should have been backing up (e.g. the "Loquendo" text to speech voices)
2. For no precise or repeatable reason, we get many reports on the forums from people simply saying "I made my backup with no problems, but now Home cannot restore it back to my device".
3. As Home seems to be so bad at doing everything else, why trust it to do the most important job of all! |

Slightly worse than that though, the backup contained all the LoquendoTTS files and folders, BUT they were all renamed to lower case, Linux is case sensitive so installing this backup rendered the TTS useless. Ever since I spent 2 hours + renaming files and folders to get it working again I have never trusted Home for anything - Mike |

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that issue...
But wasn't that yet another problem?
I'm sure there was a version that asked if you wanted to "save some space" without actually telling you what it was missing out. |

These days I keep a day 01 backup and only save the different maps and applications on the PC under each device I use. All this is nice and tidy on the PC stored and indexed by device, but even this is consuming nearly 70GB - now I know why I put 3TB of storage in the PC! - Mike |

The "single backup" is just mad!
Surely a regular scenario is:
Make backup
Use device
Get offered new software
Think "Better make backup first"
Install new software
Think, "This is nice, better make a new backup!"
Days later, discover a subtle problem, not immediately apparent.
Try to return to previous configuration
Ooops! No backup any more! |

Yes, I manage my Backups in the same fashion as Mike. Backup before a major change and after the major change. Indexed too. Most computers now have huge Hard Disk storage and so the size of the Backups presents no problem. As Nelson once said “Be prepared”. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.
