|

Hi, all.
I have just rescued a TomTom from work; it was going to be scrapped.
it is functioning, but needs updating.
The model is TomTom Go and is running firmware version 4.420. Is it possible to download any updates for free, ie firmware, and UK map.
I do not have any registration codes or the original packaging.
Any help for this satnav newbie is really appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris. |

Maps aren't free but you can update the firmware. I'm not sure if HOME will offer you an update as you're running a very old firmware version but plug it in and see.
If you don't have HOME it can be downloaded at:

Darren,
I'm not using Windows. Is there a way to just download the firmware to my PC and copy it on to my TomTom, via USB? I can "see" my TomTom when I plug it in to USB. How do I determine which version of the GO that I have?
Cheers,
Chris. |

You can find the "Device Code" by going through the Change Preferences menu. Or by clicking the bottom right of the screen and then on the next screen, click on the version number. The following screen gives you the code.
If you need an activation code for a new map, the new map will come with a "Product Code". Use the Product Code and Device Code in the online activation code generator at www.ttcode.com.
On the other hand, if TT Home recognises the GO, you will be offered a new map to buy and it will come to TT Home your PC pre-authorised and ready to install, if you make the purchase. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

All current firmware is deployed via HOME which is available only for Windows and Mac.
You can 'extract' the relevant files from HOME to use elsewhere but you need HOME at some point to update to the latest firmware. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hmmm, I'm not using Mac or Windows. If I find an update elsewhere on the net, could I just add it to my TomTom as a "mass storage device"?
Failing this, i think my TomTom will be staying out of date.
Cheers,

TomTom HOME downloads the update as a .cab file and auto installs it. If you can find the .cab file you can extract the contents and copy across to the GO. It will then update itself when unplugged from your box.
You can get an update to v6 here hosted by our Oldboy, a Mod here.
Assuming your device is a GO or GO Classic it should look like this:
If so, take a full copy of the entire contents of your GO and save to your box.
Download the .zip file from that link, unzip anc copy the contents to your GO overwriting the existing files, disconnect and allow it to reboot and update.
You will then have v6 software at least! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Just copying the old stuff to my box. If the upgrade works (fingers crossed), do I just need to copy the directory named "Great-Britain-Map" back over to the "clean" TomTom?
Cheers,
Chris. |

Yes. As long as you have a Backup then you have the assurance of recovering from any mistakes. _________________ Richard

Ahhh,
Copied the 6 files to my TomTom. Now it won't boot or show any sign of power, so I can't mount it as a mass storage device, to revert.....dohhhh.
Looks like there's a reset button on the base.

Just to clarify, take a 'copy' of the GO, leave the folders intact. Then use the update files to 'overwrite' the system files on the GO.
If there is any issue we can then use the backup to return you to the original state. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Try the reset button, if that fails apply power to it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Oops. I moved the old files to my PC, and copied the new ones over. Looks like I may have to test the reset button.

Do the Reset and it will usually clear the problem.
I don't know if you have the same thing in Lunux but is there a Safely Remove Hardware Function. Would it be called something like Unmount.
The problem is that USB Devices don't always finish writing before you unplug them. So disconnecting in an orderly fashion is usually what does the trick. _________________ Richard
