I am trying to back-up my TTone V2. I have tried using windows explorer & TT Home software to back up. An error message appears with "cannot read file ethome.bif". The back-up process then stops without completing.
Any ideas what "ethome.bif" is or does. Can I delete it from my Tomtom sd card? I have not got a back-up copy, so I dont want to cock it up as the tomtom still works ok. Cheers. |

The .bif files in TT are normally Text Files that can be opened with Notepad.
I've never heard of this one (but ET and HOME springs to mind). I don't know if anyone else has any ideas.
As Explorer can't read it, Notepad will probably have the same problem.
I presume the File is in the Root of the Device, in which case I would select ALL the Files and Folders again, but this time de-select the problem file by Clicking it with the Ctrl key pressed.
This should allow you to Copy everything else to the PC. At least then, you will have the workings of a ONE Backed Up.
The Map is always the most important thing to have a Backup of. Software is free. _________________ Richard

We seem to be seeing similar things more and more, where one or two files won't copy.
It COULD be down to a USB issue, try another port.
I solved it when it happened to me by copying bit by bit, selecting just a folder at a time and doing the problem files one by one. It doesn't instil confidence though!
For info, I've never heard of that particular .bif file before and it doesn't appear on any of my backups. |

Can you report back where this file is located on the device, use Windows Explorer to locate it, if its in the root of the device i.e. not stored in a folder it can be deleted and easily recovered if the device won't boot afterwards - Mike |

I tried to copy all the files except the "ethome.bif" file as suggested. The back-up completed successfully. I then copied the the files onto a different sd card & it works in the tomtom ok.
The ethome.bif file is on its own & not in any particular folder. Its size is 1kb. Windows will not open it to see what it is. As i now have another working sd back-up, is it a good idea to delete or leave the .bif file on the original tomtom sd card? |

I would remove it to be honest, if the file is not in a folder it can be easily recovered using Home to replace the required files in the Root of the device - Mike |

But don't rely on it. Use Windows Explorer for your backups. Apart from the unreliabilty of Home backups, only the latest one is saved, whereas with Windows you can keep as many as you want. _________________ Anita
