Quick question before buying

Hi guys,

Thinking about getting a new satnav and a subscription as the talex i've been using seems unreliable with every new database update. If i get a satnav then add the speed camera database, do i have to enter a destination every single time i drive and do i have to follow the route for the speed camera alerts to work? Or can i just go for a drive off somewhere without setting a destination and the satnav will just follow me and warn me just like the talex system? I did search the forums and didn't find an answer - so i'm guessing the answer is obviously very yes or very no, as no one else seems to need to know that answer but me!

It varies by machine and some have different options that affect how it will work.

On the models I know best (TomToms), and using the camera database from here, you can set each camera type to either warn whenever you come within a certain radius OR within a certain radius AND on your route.
Both have advantages and disadvantages.
"Normal" means you get more false alerts for cameras on nearby roads, "Only on Route" means you have to have a route set (but that's no big deal, I run it like that all the time).

Hello Andy, I have a TT 720 and have set the cameras to warn only when on route. I have found myself driving along a motorway, only to be warned that there is a camera ahead at 30 mph Surprised

This can especially happen near junctions or on flyovers.

You mention being able to set the radius? I can't say that I have found that control yet.

I do a lot of travelling up and down the A1 at the monment and sometimes get warned about cameras on ther opposite carriageway, but sometimes not. I can live with the wrong carriageway, but how can I get rid of the flyover sightings please?

Thanks for the reply - thats handy to know. I think i didn't ask the right question though, what i meant to ask is like the talex, i just jump in and turn the key and go wherever i'm going. If i get a sat nav, do i have to enter a route before driving off to get it to warn me of cameras, or will it know where i am and warn me?

Obviously on long journeys or when i don't know the route that's fine, but it would seem a bit of a pain to enter a local destination for small trips and then have to follow it's route!

the tomtom 'warn only on route' option means that you only get warned of cameras on your road (in theory!) BUT you must have a route set for this. you can have 'normal' warnings on the tomtom but you will likely get more false alerts (cameras on side roads etc).

not many systems use directional data - garmin do BUT only for their own database... they block access to this feature for 3rd party providers...

at the moment we are beta-testing a version of the PGPSW database for talex devices - at the moment the beta files are only available to subscribers though.
