Maybe I'm the only one - but I don't generally want to hear my SATNAV giving me directions, especially when I'm an a familiar route. But it is useful to have audible alerts of speed cameras.

So this afternoon - instead of being out in the sunshine Rolling Eyes - I copied the file English_American_.vpm across from my nuvi200w, made a backup copy, and then dismantled it using Ash's excellent voice utility software (see http://tinyurl.com/4n63zz).

An analysis of the 116 wav files produced shows that two of these are silent, while there are several files that produce assorting bings, bongs and clicks, the rest being words like "ferry". (I swear that the American speaker was saying "fairy" - took me about 30 seconds to realise that she was really talking about a ship ... !)

For anyone who wants to see the list of component files, I've uploaded the Excel spreadsheet to http://tinyurl.com/3k2bv5. The revised voicefile ready to be copied back to the unit is at http://tinyurl.com/3j2hn8.

Using this revised file (ie selecting the American English voice in "settings") gives no spoken alerts but with all the noise warnings associated with speed cameras. Great stuff!!! :D

Usual caveats apply - I have not tested it on any other units, make sure you back up your files, do this at your own risk, I'm not responsible for any loss or damage etc ...
