I just encountered the intermittent problem - reported by other people - whereby XP is unable to detect a correctly connected Mio device (the problem seems to be reported with the 310/510/710).

The device is displayed as "Unknown device" and XP reports that the device has malfunctioned.

I was never able to find a solution other than to, usually, wait a day or 3 and hope that the connection started to work again (it usually does for no apparent reason).

Anyway, on this occasion I used a different USB lead - this didn't fix the problem. I then used the USB lead that was supplied with the device and, hey presto, the connection worked. I switched again to the other (working) USB leads and the connection could not be established. When I used the supplied (apparently generic) USB lead the connection worked again. Tried again and the same thing.

It seems then that, for some reason, the connection is particularly sensitive to some quality of the USB lead. The 2 other leads I've tried are definitely not faulty - and one of them (the main one I use) has previously worked with the C710 without any problem.

I'm not sure where this leaves people who don't have the Mio supplied USB lead - probably paying a silly amount of money to buy one.

Are you using a 4 or 5 pin USB lead?
This could make the difference
