Doesn't sound too promising for the new Mio Navman then, which is a real pitty as they have a great opportunity to launch something exciting and some real competition and innovation to the market
Will wait on the SmartSt 2008 2nd Edition release before making my decisions... |

Hardly surprising given their decision to stick with Navman's SmartST software. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes Darren - but they have the resources to make it happen. Suppose it just now needs the will
They are planning second generation navman - mio units for late summer 08 to follow the new (just released) moov series and the forthcoming Navman s series 3D with 2nd edition SmartST
This will be there chance to get it right or disappear. In fairness they DO have so much right, just seem to lack enthusiasm and innovation
They cann't be silly enough to give away a third place globally can they...
Quote: | At the global level, before TomTom Garmin is a short head:
1. Garmin 28%
2. TomTom 27%
3. Mio + Navman 12%
4. Magellan 7%

Your dying faith in Navman is remarkable but Mio have taken a big risk here. Navman users may be happy to accept the change of branding but retain SmartST, a great many Mio users will not.
If they are loyal enough to change to SmartST equipped Mio devices then I doubt they will repeat the mistake with the next step and Mio will have lost a large number of customers.
Navman relied on their brand for far too long and we're consumed because of it. Garmin/TomTom do well because their customers come back time after time and upgrade to newer hardware, TomTom still release updates for their original units enabling new functionality etc. Navman lost a large number of customers because they don't support older units, new ones come out, old ones are dead in the water as far as they are concerned.
I started with a Navman, the Uk guys are great but the company as a whole lost the way a long time ago and SmartST should have been confined to the waste bin by Mio. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I agree, but having many Sat Nav brands over the years, including my first colour GPS - the iCN630 on the day it released! - Navman have never been spectacular, but reliable Navigation
I turned to TomTom and hated the map visuals
I turned to Garmin (Nuvi) and couldn't live the the lack of "next turn" (let alone the one after that!) missing from the navigation screen, and constant country lane driving
I turned to Navigon (Loox n100 then the 7110) and could put up with the constant crashing of the unit and poor support
So returned to Navman (s90i) and am generally quite pleased
BUT you are right, they need to take on board everything that is good about Garmin and TomTom, like regular patches and updates available, then add innovation like Navigon. They have the basics, and the resources and would like to see it happen. But they just seem to slow in responding...
By the way Darren, considering my next addition (for the summer) will be either a TomTom 930 (like MapShare and regular updates / roundabout directions), or Navigon 8110 (like visusals, multi-point routing is easy, lane assistant pro looks ideal, and as regularly need to visit recent developments in my work, the new 3 monthly FreshMaps looks like a good-send) - what would you say? |

I have never liked Navigon so perhaps my anti-Navigon bias should preclude me from commenting? The interface has always been very slow, small on-screen information panels and an unintuitive UI were my findings. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes that was my experience with the 7110 after a few weeks use
Thought my sight was failing me as I tried to read the info boxes, and it is slow (but this at least seems to be address in the 8110 with a graphics accelorator). A go this week on the TomTom 520 and the slick desktop software (compared with others) go me thinking about giving them another go...
Thanks for the advice |

If I were spending my money it would be Garmin or TomTom. Garmin's UI is a little simple for my tastes but both offer good solutions. _________________ Darren Griffin |

For me it would be IGO8 graphics, Tomtom for the ease of adding POI's, with the user support and knowledge of Garmin. _________________ Samsung Mega

Sounds like a reasonable spec although i remain to be convinced that iGO8 isn't simply eye candy for the sake of it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

it IS actually good software, admittedly the eye-candy bit can appear to be the main selling point at times, but it IS good software (just very memory hogging!)
