Until yesterday, I always believed that you could probably ignore the mobile cameras positions once it got dark. They use normal cameras that need sufficient light to make any readings and I certainly had never seen one in use in the dark.
Last night (3rd March) at 19:30 on the A43 Southbound just before Silverstone, Northamptonshire, there was a mobile unit in use - it is a dark unlit stretch of road. They had a bright light shining across the road, but not towards any traffic.
My assumption now is that they have deployed infra red based technology and will therefore be out at any time.
Anyone else heard of this?

Perhaps this quote today from a member of Leics and Rutland Safety Camera Partnership might help
Quote:
With regards to the visibility of the van, vehicle lights are not required when enforcing in a 30mph zone because street lighting along the site means it is illuminated.

I am confident that the majority would agree that a lamp post is not a significant obstruction to the visibility of a large vehicle like our mobile camera vans.

I also disagree with the comment that we should not be enforcing when it is dark. Current figures for the area show that in 2007, 50 per cent of fatal collisions and 40 per cent of collisions resulting in serious injury or death occurred when it was dark. Taking into consideration the fact that the volume of traffic is significantly lower when it is dark, the figures show that collisions involving death and injury at this time are disproportionately high.

Hmm, by this measure, mobile speed cameras should mostly be used at night then?

And all you hooligans who aren't whitevanmen should bear this in mind when you fancy blasting up the motorways at 95mph at 2am. Twisted Evil
