Current set-up
iPAQ 3970 (PPC2002 ROM 2.10),
TomTom (Leadtek 9532) wired GPS Receiver
TT Generic PDA windscreen mount
TTNav 2.24
TTNav GPS Driver 2.07

I’m thinking of buying a Bluetooth receiver that will work with the above equipment and that has a performance equal to or better than my TomTom wired GPS Receiver. However, the BT receiver must above all be reliable!

The BT receiver will be plugged into a secondary cigar lighter that will be powered only when the ignition is switched on.

My main requirement is to reduce some wires in my vehicle for SatNav and to make it easier to use it in borrowed vehicles. Although at some point in the future I may invest in a program like Memory Map for a little walking. I have no need for data logging at the moment.

I like the idea of a user replaceable battery as that can help with rebooting the GPS if needs be and should also extend the useful life of the GPS, as I’d rather replace a worn-out battery than a complete GPS unit.

I don’t want to spend a silly amount of money for a BT GPS unit, but I will use a reputable retailer instead of eBay, as I would like back-up support should I need it.

Would I need to change the TT GPS Driver?

Is there anything else I need to consider?
What are your experiences of using a Bluetooth GPS receiver?
What unit would you recommend?

Many thanks,

You can keep your setup as is (assuming you have the SD patch installed over 2.10). Especially the GPS 2.07 - so much better than 2.09

I am using the same setup as you, and am using a variety of BT receivers without any problems.

- Please check our comparison database - it has a pretty good overview.

- Make sure the GPS has the same power connector as the iPAQ (5V plug)

- replaceable battery is nice but let's be realistic - the standard battery has at least 500 cycles. That's a good two years of permanent usage (even more when you leave it powered on). And who knows, in two years we will have GSM GPS receivers with 256 MB of Flash memory...

My favourite? It would have to to be the TomTom GPS. The cradle is convenient and guarantees the receiver is fully charged whenever I need it and when hard wired it turns on/off with the ignition.

Second choice is the Royaltek Datalogger. The logs are superb and have many many uses.

There isn't a right/wrong answer here, everyone has different requirements so I wouls reccomend running the BT Comparison Database, entering those features you place high importance on and seeing what results!
