I am trying to update the speed camera database on a Tom Tom one xl - it does not have an sd card. do i need one, to put the data on as i cannot update the Tom Tom direct. on my old 501 i could treat it like an extra hard drive. this one does not show anything up if i use windows expolerer.
Any help with be appreciated

Try connecting the device directly to a USB port on the rear of the PC, it should show up as an external hard drive, does the device ask you to "Connect to Computer" yes/ no when you plug it in? - Mike

Other than using internal flash memory rather than an SD card, it all SHOULD work exactly the same as you're used to. The camera data files go in the map folder just as they always have.
So... your problem is to get your PC to recognise the TT as a new drive.

Are you saying that the PC doesn't recognise the TT as a new drive AT ALL?
Or are you saying it recognises it as a new drive (with a new drive letter) but cannot read the contents?

If the first one:
In my experience, this is always a PC issue rather than a TT one, I had one PC at work that took AGES to recognise my Go but got there in the end, and I've heard of lots of people on the forums who've had the same problem you've got where it never gets there.

My fist suggestions are:
1. (as Mike says) try another USB port
2. Check Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / USB controllers for any conflicts on the USB ports
3. Try every combination of having the PC's power and the TomTom's power on or off, when you plug in.

If the second one... I'm flummoxed so far.

Now you can see the device the most important thing to do is a full backup, have a read of the FAQ page #1 details what to do, see Here
As an aside, what fixed the unit (more for the benefit of others who might read this thread at some future point with a similar problem - Mike

Just so all are aware, the fault appears to be with my laptop settings - as on the main computer i can see all ther files on the harddrive and have been able to alter the stuff i wanted straight away (personally i blame the operator.... oh that would be me)
