I'm looking to buy a SatNav for the UK, and possibly for use in Europe later. I originally had a cheap and nasty one, but I sent that back because the maps were really out of date and there was no way at all to update them.
So, after a bit of research, I've narrowed it down to two, the Garmin Nuvi 250 and the TomTom Go Europe.
Both seem to get fairly good reviews. I'm not fussed about playing MP3s, but I'd like the ability to get updated maps. Has anyone tried either or both and can help me decide which to go for? I know TomTom are heavily marketed, but there seems to be no information as to whether they're genuinely superior or not.
Also, do you get free map updates for any period of time? I know TomTom has mapshare, but neither Garmin or TomTom's website seems to be clear on how long, if at all, you get free updates for.
Welcome. Both companies have just released new map updates, Europe 2008 for Garmin and v715 for Tomtom, so nothing in it as far as mapping goes. Both will have map errors because they are never perfect.
Best bet is have a go with the units in Halfords and see what you think, you won't be disappointed by either. Some people prefer that on the tomtom display there is an arrow for your next turn this helps when approaching roundabouts to get in the correct lane. Garmin has better customer service and also map coverage of eastern europe which tomtom does not. _________________ Samsung Mega

I first bought TT1 uk with traffic, software and ease of use brill. But i then wanted POI etc and updated maps, problems as then the unit crashed. Didnt work after that. So exchanged for garmin 350t and so far no problems. I dont think the units software is as good as TT but its done all downloads without a hitch.
