Well, I've had my 550 for ages now - complete with traffic module. Seem there are no map updates available, and that Navman have pretty much abandoned it.

I've put tomTom on it, whichworks well, and is faster and more accurate than the original Navman stuff, but, of course, TomTom doesn't support the traffic module - and that's a shame.

So, does anyone know of a way of using all this expensive hardware with traffic functionality and up-to-date maps?

Navman discontinued the support for this mode pretty much as soon as it was released.

You will need to upgrade your hardware to get both.

A TomTom One Third Edition or better still a One XL devce with an RDS-TMC receiver is probably your lowest cost option to replace the equipment you currently have and continue with the TomTom software.

At least buying into this product range will offer the longer term support for future map purchases which is something you have sadly encountered with the 550 - Mike

Hi hifistud,

Pardon my side message to your query but I too own a 550 and have been reading up on unlocking it. Can you tell me where you sourced your unlock hack and tomtom maps from? I'm not technically savvy so was it easy to do as I don't wish to end up bricking the unit? Shocked

Cheers and good luck with looking for a new system - the latest tomtom do look tempting with map share etc.

It was a complete pain, and the damned thing was, as you put it, bricked for quite a while. I'm still not entirely certain how I did it - but I googled "navman 550 unlock" and went from there. I ended up here: http://navmanunlocked.wikispaces.com/Tomtom and got the unloc kit from there.

Thanks to all - I kinda hoped I was wrong, but I had the feeling I was going to be goosed. So, say hello to the owner of a brand new TomTom GO520T - and it's super.

I'm loving the speed, I'm loving the integration with my phone, I'm loving the radio send to the in-car system. It's a cracking unit.

Shame the traffic module seems to have a bit of a problem, but I trust TomTom to sort that one out in a forthcoming release.

Check the small white flag near the connector on the RDS device it needs to end with the numbers .013 to be sure it is the newest type, otherwise make sure the aerial wire is 5CM away from the structure of the vehicle ("A" pillars etc).
Oh and if you haven't performed a full back up of the device to the PC please do so immediately, Windows Explorer is the preferred method for doing this, you will find some instructions on the FAQ page which can be found HERE - Mike

Mike, I tried to back-up my N20 following your guidance notes in the hope that if would work for me (and the N20), but it stops half way through saying that one particular file cannot be copied as it is locked. Also, when the files are in the process of being transferred it says that they are being converted to Desktop PC format - does this affect the restoration, if needed?

Graham, the instructions I linked to above were aimed at hifistud to back up his new TomTom 520, I an not too sure if the Navman device will backup using the same method, although if you are getting a file transfer error part way through the copy process the files on the PC will not cntain a full backup set that could be used when needed.
Doesn't the Navman desktop software contain a device backup option? although I am not upto date with the Navman software to be honest - Mike

Thanks Mike
I will look at the BackUp options in the Navman Desktop. Your method for TomTom should work also, however the backup hangs at file 'gwes' "Access is Denied"
I've no idea what that file is and I don't recognise the file suffix, apart from, I suspect it is a graphics file.
Press on......Graham

GWES is a part of WinCE -- there is no point backing up Windows directory as all contents there are either part of ROM or copied there when device is power cycled.
