| Hi ... I have a 210 with GoPal ME 2.0 ... I am trying to install maps of France on the system. Apart from loading the .psf file into the map region subfolder on the flash disk, what else do I need to do ... i have tried this and it does not show the new file... also tried a placing map region folder on a sd card and still not seeing the new map... (oh the France psf is from another medion system that runs GoPal3.0 ..should that make a difference?) Help and go easy on me i am a newbie ! |

| I don't have personal experience of GoPal, but most mapping software is copy protected to stop people making unlicensed copies as you are trying to do. I suspect that you will need to buy an upgrade for it to work properly. Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted! |

Thanks for your response Sallyann... however you're a bit quick in concluding that i am making an unlicensed copy ... I actually own both systems, and the software that came with them. I can therefore do what i wish with the software I have legally purchased. I am not offering it to a third party or breaking any copyright issues.
I posted this question on this forum because reading past posts it seems that folk have transferred software between many systems including running tomtom on medion etcetc...
Now what i am actually looking for is someone who actually know Medion systems and their files ... anyone ?? |

I understand what you are saying Redred, and I don't wish to offend. But as a general principle commercial software cannot be purchased, only licensed.
The supplier of the software will say that you have not purchased it to do what you like with - you have only purchased a licence to use it on the unit that it came with. To copy it onto another device, whether or not it is one you also own, they would expect you to buy another licence. That's why they make it difficult for you to copy it.
I'm not attempting to criticise you, just explaining why the process of copying the data is not as straightforward as you hoped.

Sallyann is correct. Most software is licensed and not owned by the purchaser, therefore you are NOT free to "do what i wish with the software I have legally purchased." You must stay within the confines of the license to which you agreed.
Maps are usually locked to a system so they cannot be transferred in this manner to prevent piracy.
Yes, we understand you use both systems but you are not licensed to have the maps on both systems, only one.
As for running TomTom on Medion etc i am not qualified to comment, however piracy (3rd party or 1st) is not tolerated here. Unless you can show that Medion allow this transfer under the terms of their license you will not get an answer here I'm afraid. |

sallyann and paul were simply pointing out what your software license is likely to allow. without physically having one here to check we can only make assumptions based on what we know. sallyann being a software developer herself has a good knowledge of licensing etc and both myself and paul have used a variety of units / software so are familiar with 'common' licensing terms.
as for 'double standards' please feel free to expand. we hold a strong line on piracy and any contravening posts will have been pulled.
running tomtom on medion is not necesary piracy. you can buy tomtom navigator software with a license to run it on 1 device - whether that is a windows mobile PDA, a medion or a myguide PND is not part of the license, just that it runs on a single device. however, a post discussing how to remove any anti-piracy measures in order to have tomtom nav running on 2 systems simultaneously WOULD be pulled.
personally i'm not convinced that your license will allow you to move the software/maps between devices regardless of ownership.
however the thread will remain open for the time being.

There is a common belief that licensing terms for much software are TOO restrictive, and I personally agree with this. In the case of maps for instance, I think that once you have 'bought' them you should be free to use them on any device you like, providing it is only on one unit at a time. But when you buy the maps you enter a legal agreement with the supplier, and you have to keep to the terms you have accepted.
The operators of this forum have to protect their own product from being copied, otherwise they would soon go out of business. It's not surprising therefore that they take a similarly firm view with other suppliers' products. No 'double standards' there.

Medion produce 2 (perhaps more) PSF maps....which work on different versions of their software......
In order to transfer (the legality & wotnot of such aside) them successfully, it would require a software upgrade (actually an entire replacement).
