The UK version of TomTom includes a list of British street names. I have a Family History project where I would like to make a list of all the street names in the city of Bristol. TomTom asociates each street with a 4 digit postcode. So if you want to navigate to a street in Bristol TomTom offers a list of streets in the BS postcode area.
I would have liked to extract this list of streets to a text file for this project but its not obvious which file holds the data as its not in a simple text file. Can anyone offer any sugestions on how to extract the street list from TomTom or suggest another source of the data, or failing that suggest a suitable Forum. All UK Satnavs will have the street list as will most mapping web sites but the user does not have direct access to the list only via the software.

The road names are part of the map data and as far I know they cannot be extracted at all, let alone by postcode sort - Mike |

Get a Bristol A-Z and scan the index using OCR word processor? _________________ Dennis

From the start Plan B was to scan and OCR the street list pages at the back of an A-Z if no one can suggest access to some existiing list of streets from whatever source. The trouble is that the text is quite small and the paper quality is poor which makes errors more likley.
For now I am still hoping to be able to get hold of a ready made street list from somewhere, before resorting to scanning.

I assume you're pretty local to me? I have a larger size A-Z you could borrow if so. _________________ Dennis

I don't know if this is any help, but there is a list available here. I don't know Bristol well enough to tell how complete the list is, but it doesn't include Durdham Park, where my brother used to live.
There is another here that does include Durdham Park.
I'm not sure, from the 1st post, whether this is a project for your own family, or whether this is a commercial project, so you would have to consider whether you would be breaching copyright by using either. _________________ Jock

FANTASTIC!! That second list looks perfect, exactly what I have been looking for as it covers the suburbs, includes road I have been looking for and it has postcodes as well. I just knew there must be a list out there somewhere that someone knew about. Its so much easier than scanning the pages in an A-Z.
Thanks so much for the help.
