VERY WEIRD ROUTE ???

i have asked for a route from say uckfield to basingstoke ..so it takes me up the a22 which is ok then onto the m25 which is ok ..here's teh weirs bit it makes me take junction 9 TOWARDS LONDON on the A 243 then all the way to kingston upon themes then back down towards the M25 on the M3 and on to basingstoke

this is the 2nd time around this area i have had weird routing the last 1 being burgh heath it made me go past junction 8 take the next junction and back on myself via epsom
I have traffic disabled have the latest software and not the latest maps 7.05 i think it is

any ideas as to why this is ..could it be mapshare doing it

Yes, that is wierd.
I know the routes you are talking about and their is just no reason to put you onto the A243.
Perhaps someone made the M25 a no entry with map corrections.

Andy, are you using the mapshare option and keeping upto date with changes via TomTom Home? - the reason I ask is that it could well be the cause of this problem, we have seen other major roads closed via this method (A40 in to London, A34 around Newbury to name but two) - to be honest I simply no longer trust it, great idea in theory but very poorly applied in practice. - Mike

Mike is it simple to get the maps back to standard.

If you have a day one back up then it is very easy, just re-install it - the back up is becoming more and more important these days when experiments need turning off, sure you can delete files etc but the fastest method if to blitz the device and turn the "feature" off - Mike

i think i have back-up on a removeable drive, yes i know mike!! don't berate me.
Otherwise how about just reloading the maps from TT home.

yes i do have a day 1 backup on my backup drive ..maybe when i have some time i will back this map up and retry the day 1 backup and see what happens .. to be honest i have noticed this for a while on the m25 from Sevenoaks to oxted tomtom always avoids that area like the plague ( but it always uses oxted to sevenoaks m25) ,but didn't mind to much as i prefer going the other way to the m23 then up to m25

so maybe it's time to chuck mapshare out the window ,which will be a pity as that's teh main reason why i got the new tomtom 720

Ok guys, i just connected my device to Home and clicked the preferences tab, clicked on mapshare and there you are asked if you want to delete your corrections, your own or verified. I take it mine are now gone?.
Don't forget to tap the icon on your device and turn off corrections there.

I am not too sure anyone has actually asked for the Map Share to be removed, and I guess from the acceptance of the terms and conditions when you accept them on the device they are difficult to switch off or remove without the "sledge hammer" approach of the day one re-install.

Why am I so against this, when it is such a great idea?

Well in principle it is a fantastic concept, but it is poorly implemented, this is a one directional combine harvester for information, the submitted information takes ages to filter through to other users and when it does it is far from trust worthy, irrespective of the trusted source settings you can apply.

It may well aid TT in collation of a decent UK POI database (although anything is better than the pathetic offering supplied on current units). They would better spending their time getting the actual maps right .

As for road alterations I simply don't like this concept, if I want to trust a navigation device to go from A to B for an important meeting I do not want to have the job of prior verification of the route, checking for roads that are blocked etc when they shouldn't be.

The map provider gives (in this case TomTom) quality data, which is then degraded by stupid and ill informed alterations that affect thousands of users - has the penny dropped yet? - "fantastic concept, but it is poorly implemented" It is all down to verification of change, and this is something that simply isn't working.

Maxi might be for me next, shame as TT have a great product but I don't like the downward trend in map detail and quality that has become apparent over the past 6 to 9 months, the map degradation is my main gripe to be honest, but that doesn't let the other issues off the hook - Mike

Whoa!! No need to do all that....
Just untick all the "trust" options (verified by TT, reported by some, reported by many etc.) on the correction preferences page, and the map goes back to "day one". Then you can put the corrections back bit by bit by re-ticking the options.
The M40 block was under the "verified by TomTom" section!

I've just done an update and it's sending me on a reasonable route at present (A22 - M23 - M25 - M3). It was the same before the update as well.

I haven't heard of any big howlers recently (since they blamed the BBC for one of the closures) so they do appear to be getting their act together regarding updates.

I've unticked tomtom map and had to do a reboot and it all now seems ok .touch wood
