I finally bit the bullet and sent my TTG720, bought last October, back to Amazon for a refund, and bought a replacement unit from a local Halfords.
Amazon were first class in their response, I will be more than happy to keep using them.
Handsfree on the new unit is perfect (tested it before leaving the shop!) and this evening, on using TTHome, I was offered the latest operating system and, wait for it.... the latest map, using latest map upgrade! All downloaded and installed with no problem.
I also changed my device in "My TomTom" on the TT website, simply by reselecting the unit, entering the new device code and hitting save - easy!
Incidentally, TomTom did offer to repair my old unit, but I opted for refund and replacement in case it had to go back again, and as it happens, this one was £59 cheaper than the first one so I've been compensated for my trouble.
Thanks to all who helped with suggestions to try and resolve the issues.

Still off-topic... No need.
Just use the format {URL=webaddress}your text{/URL} (using square not curly brackets).
I've got it down to a fine art...
just copy the URL you want to use (right click or use ctrl-C), then:
click on the URL button above the window,
press left arrow on keyboard,
then the equals key,
paste theURL (I use ctrl-V),
press right arrow and type text,
click on URL button again.
