I am trying to hardwire a Garmin Streetpilot C340. In order to avoid cutting up the cigarette plug, I have put together a new wire to connect to the cigarette lighter harness behind the dash.
I have an inline fuse to duplicate the one in the cigarette lighter, and I soldered on a DC plug to connect to the GPS. However, the connection does not seem to be that reliable. Voltage through the new wire is correct, so is there something I am missing, any thoughts?
Also, can anyone confirm what size DC plug this unit uses? It occurs to me the size I used could be slightly off, resulting in a poor connection at the jack. |

Well the standard car cigarette lighter socket is 21mm internal diameter and most plugs have a spring arrangement that is slightly greater. Certainly the one on my nuvi 660 is a firm fit - it takes a bit of effort to remove it.
If it is a loose fit I would suggest returning the socket to the supplier as unfit for purpose.
I seem to recall that some manufacturers do use a slightly larger plug/socket (so called cigar lighter?) but I have never come across one so I cn't tell you the size of it. _________________ Phil |

I am talking about the jack that connects to the GPS unit itself (or the mount in the case of the C340), the other end of the cable from the cigarette lighter.
Outside diameter for the jack should be in the neighborhood of 5mm I think. I looked at radio shack, and the DC jacks seem to be labeled with letters (sizes k,l,m etc.) I am wondering if anyone can confirm which size fits the jack on this unit.
