Over the past week or two 7 new specs cameras have been put up on the A27 Havant, Hampshire but its difficult to work out which is which at the moment. Any ideas?

Not sure what you mean by which is which? They're SPECS cameras, what else is is that you wish to know?

I thought they worked in pairs, there are 7? They seem quite a short distance between the cameras, just seems odd, like its a test point.

They do work in pairs.

They record the time between camera 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4,4 and 5, 5 and 6, 6 and 7....

Do you know if its always like that, Paul?
I've often wondered how they are paired, for example what happens when you have another entry camera on a slip road joining a section that is already "specced". If there's only one exit camera, can it work with both entry cameras?

There's a quote on the BBC website (talking about the "changing lanes" dodge)...
Quote:
You might be picked up by entry camera A, speed down to camera B and change lane only to find that that was also an entry camera and that either exit cameras C or D would get you further down the road.

So maybe they do work in pairs but not necessarily in a straightforward sequence, anyone know for sure?

The SCS (makers) website is pretty vague:
Quote:
A pair of cameras creates a speed controlled zone and groups of cameras can be linked to create a speed controlled network.

Or could these cameras be like Bluetooth devices and have the ability to 'pair' with more than one?

For example, it is assumed that 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 are pairs, but what if camera 1 could also pair with camera 7 and measure your average speed throughout the whole distance? This would then catch anybody who speeds up between what they think are unlinked cameras.

There must be a reason for it because these cameras are matched by an identical set on the other carriageway.

It's not as straightforward as you suggest.

You enter the zone and your time is recorded. This could be at the first camera in the zone, a slip road camera mid-way or indeed any other camera as your car may have been obscured from earlier cameras by other traffic.

Your time when passing every other camera is also recorded. Each camera is far enough apart for an accurate Time/Distance=Speed calculation to be calculated.

So it Could be 1+2, 2+3, 3+4 or indeed 1+3 or 2+4 etc etc to cater for conditions where a camera is unable to see or record your registration.

I'll admit it's just how i always thought it was. I knew about the lane change loop hole but didn't realsie that if you change lane between one set of cameras and then back to the original lane between another set of cameras you can still be prosecuted. I thought it recorded you between one camera and the next.

There has been much talk of the change lane loophole. None of it based on actual facts. Much of it is based on interpreting the approval document.

The fact is that the devices can monitor multiple lanes, what is at issue is whether this data is used or if the system weeds out the data where a vehicle has changed lanes to abide by the approval.

I certainly would not rely on this 'loophole' until a test case has proved that it exists!
