Looking to buy my first ever in car sat nav.
Have a budget of around £180-200.
Something with Bluetooth would be preferable....not overly fussed about Traffic updates.
At the moment 2 have caught my eye....TomTom 720 & Navman S50.
Have heard the Sony units are supposed to be good as well.
Any got any recommendations or advice? |

I would take a look at the GARMIN nuvi range - very reliable kit. NOT 2xx series - no bluetooth - but still very good price to be had.
Amazon UK have 310 (UK mapping) for £148 - excellent value. My wife has one of these - very nice unit.
GARMIN are just in the process of releasing the new mapping (2008). Check that your new unit comes with the latest maps although it is possible you may get a 'free' upgrade from GARMIN if not - worth checking with GARMIN first though.
I found the GARMIN V9 maps (on my nuvi 660- Jan 2007) were much better than the 660 maps on my TomTom (which were then their current maps). _________________ Phil |

Hi DonutUK
I've just bought the S50 as my first unit. I have an issue or two with it being the speed camera database and the bluetooth has to search everytime it switched on to pair up with my phone.
When I think about it though, i shouldn't be speeding and it only takes a couple of mins to connect the phone.
Even more important, it gets me where i want to go very efficiently and beats the wife tring to read a map!

I was going to suggest a Garmin or TomTom so the 720 would be a good choice.
The Navman S-Series have far to many issues for me to be able to recommend them at the moment. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Is there much to choose between the Nuvi 310 and the 720?
Like the look of both, but have read some comments about Garmin's leading people up farm tracks etc.....? |

It's a personal preference thing, Garmin users will swear by Garmin and TomTom users TomTom!
I personally prefer the display of the TomTom's, for me the Garmin lacks some on-screen info I consider important but I doubt you'd be disappointed whichever way you decide to go out of the two. _________________ Darren Griffin |
