We've gone through 2 GPS Receivers in 2 months. The 1st one was the standard Tomtom receiver, hardwired with the supplied cable (lasted 1 day). The 2nd one was a Leadtek 9532 which lasted over a month and was powered through the cigarette lighter.
It's been suggested that the car battery may be causing a power surge which is blowing them. Is there any surge protection that we can install to prevent this happening again? |

Hi JS,
I use a four-way fused adapter, which I plug into my cigar lighter. That provides enough sockets to plug in the iPAQ and the TomTom (Leadtek) wired GPS receiver as well as a few other 12v accessories.
I would suggest that, if you don’t already do so, you start the engine and switch on all other electrical devices before you finally plug in the PDA/GPS. Also you disconnect the PDA/GPS before you switch off the engine.
You may want to check the fuses in your vehicle, especially the one for the cigar lighter.
I thought that I’d seen “Surge Protectors” for 12v electrical appliances that plug into the cigar lighter. However I’ve had a quick look on the web and can’t see anything that looked suitable.
You may want to get the vehicle’s electrics checked next time you’re in the garage.
You could always call into a caravan or motoring place and ask if they sell Surge Protectors that would sit your needs.
I hope that you fix the problem.
