Just bought a brand new UK rx5935 which has maps v6.5 - these are at least a year out of date. The Kent A228 leybourne bypass isnt included and this opened a year ago.

HP customer support is terrible - they dont recognise that buying a supposedly new product that is out-of-date is an issue.

So on top of whatever you might pay for the ipaq, figure on spending more to get the latest maps. £30 for uk, £50 for europe etc.

I've tried (and failed) to convince them that there should be a voucher that entitles you to a one-time map upgrade.

The HP UK customer services manager is Steven Gill and his address is

Bracknell
Berkshire, RG12 1HN

If you contact TomTom, with proof of date of purchase, they may let you download newer maps

I have a similar problem with my Hp rx5720(bought 4 weeks ago) it came with Tomtom ver 6.1 installed (worse coverage than my co-pilot6 purchased 2 years ago)
Contacted Hp and they said

Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.

There is no updated Maps for this product available from HP. Hp is in talks with Tom Tom about creating a web page for customer to purchase the new and most recent map updates.

Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.

Tomtom response was
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
Having researched your case in detail, it emerges that since this service is part of a deal with HP, application version 6.100, and there is no product code, you are not therefore eligable for the free map upgrade.
Which arrived on the 1st of August(the day after their 20% off sale ended
Twisted Evil )

This is my first HP/Tomtom experience but unfortunately not a good one.

Hope you have better luck than me Rab Sad

dont forget that these units will be prepacked so it depends on how long the stock has been sat in the warehouse as to how old the maps are so the fact it came withe a 6.50 mapmeans that it was preloaded with the maps whaich was the lastest that hp had access to when the device was made and the device fininshed please dont forget this when ordering new products

I bought an RX5935 in June at the airport. Couldn't get the wireless to work on it so got it replaced. Same again wireless wouldn't work. Also noticed the maps were pretty old too.

Ended up taking it back this week and a got full refund as the unit was faulty. You may want to try getting a refund on the unit and go for something else. The wireless issue is known on some forums.

I paid a bit extra and plumped for a dedicated TT Go 720 and must say it hasn't disappointed so unless you need a wireless connection and the pda capability i'd defo recommend changing for the Go.

I've finally had enough of having to hard reset my Travel Companion rx5935 and it is now with HP for repair.
No problem with the way in which HP dealt with my problem over the phone; in fact the chap at the other end was very sympathetic when I told him I had had to hard reset the unit three times in the last three days!
One thing that is annoying is the HP website. Trying to get a phone number is dreadful. You are sent all round the houses. I eventually searched here to get the UK number - 0870 842 2330.
The issues I had with the unit were as follows:

1. Soft reset hangs at the initialise stage
2. Various errors on start up - HP Explorer cannot be started etc
3. Synchronization cannot be completed successfully error which can only be fixed by a hard reset
4. Icons blacking out - Especially Bluetooth Connection Manager
5. Start menu displays gibberish rather than actual programs.
5. Email POP3 settings lost
6. Unit fails to turn on requiring multiple presses of the on button.

The one application, I've never had a problem with was TomTom. It has worked perfectly and is very stable.

I am worried that there is something inherently wrong with the Operating System. I doubt very much that there is an actual hardware fault (the unit does work for a short time after a hard reset) which means software - but of course the software is in ROM so unless they are going to load new firmware (non is available on the HP website of course) what on earth can they do?

Mine has been reliable-ish. Once the HP pre-install software complained about missing/corrupt certificate and couildnt start the hplauncher - a reset fixed it.

Gave up waiting for either hp/tomtom to sort out the map issue... isnt bittorrent a wonderful thing ;)

Of the other annoying thing is that Skype doesnt support the ARM CPU thats in the ipaq. You can chat, but making a call crashes skype. Apparently there are old beta versions of skype v2 that do work - but I havent had chance to try yet.

Its a shame the ipaq doesnt have a SIM slot. Looked at the HTC Touch - aside from being a bit small looks like the dogs do-da'sL GPS, Wifi, 3G etc

Good news is that unit was returned after 6 days with a new motherboard.
It has worked just fine for a couple of weeks. I even downloaded the TomTom map update for the rx 5935 off the HP website.
Happy again!
