Hi,
I am really sorry if this is the wrong place but I couldn't find any where better.
I have just bought a TomTom GO720 and my first impressions are very positive - apart from the manky documentation. If you purchase a TomTom 720 GO you will eventually br prompted for a later version of TomTom Home and you will end up with a Ver 2.xxx. The CD with my purchase had a ver 1.xx and this was rubbish, the later version has a better manual too - ie it actually makes some sense.
I started to set this up on my development machine (I am a programmer who works from home) and the CD suppiled caused the "blue screen of death" with Win2000. Possibly the later version works with Win2000 but you do not want to see the "blue screen of death" more than 3 or 4 times a year! So I switched to our laptop using XP and this was fine.
I am up and running now and have been playing around a bit but haven't had the time to use it in anger yet.
I do have one problem though, which I am hoping someone out there can help me with:-
How do I download POIs from this wonderful site onto my new toy. The download produces a zip file which I can open and read the stuff in it but if I copy the zip file or it's contents into the downloads folder then it doesn't get seen by TomTom Home.
The downloads folder contains two files for eac set of POIs, a xxxxxxxx.toc (table of contents I guess) and a xxxxxxxx.cab file. Now a cab file is like zipfile and they contain 3 files:
a jpeg screen icon i suppose
and ov2 the actual data
and a ver a version number.
Do I need to convert the zipfile I download here into this format?

The POIs that you can download from this site are known as Third Party Custom POIs. HOME is not needed for these to be installed onto the Unit.
In fact HOME is used as little as possible.
The procedure is the same for the Safety Cameras, as for the POIs. But before you add anything, have a look at the FAQs Page.
Number 1 is most important, and 4 explains how to put Cameras on, but the same applies to POIs. You probably won't want the Warnings so skip that bit.

From this site the Zip File is unzipped and the contents Copy/Pasted into the Map Folder on the Device using Windows Explorer.

This is how files are downloaded from TomTom.
So where are you actually downloading the Files from? _________________ Richard

Hi Oldboy,
Thank you very much - I can now see and Navigate to The National Trust sites and this is in my eyes a really useful feature.

Not sure what you mean here! I downloaded the zip file from this site and was using my XP fettled lap top to do the down load to the TomTom. Although before your reply I wasn't downloading to the TomTom at all!
One other question! The GO720 has, I think, 2Gb of built-in memory plus a memory slot for an SD card. If I put an SD card in the slot then what do I see it as?
A simple extension to the memory space on the GO720
A seperate memory space - if so how do I then use it?
Thanks again your reply was really helpful, much appreciated.

Simple answer to the SD card question....
On previous models that have internal memory for the maps etc, an optional SD card could only be used to completely replace the memory. Everything had to be present on the card - software, maps, the lot. If a card was in the slot, the machine would boot from it and ignore the internal memory.
On an x20 model, the SD card can be used to store extra maps, and mp3s, audiobooks etc. If there is an SD card in the slot at boot-up, the device will try to boot from that, but if there are no operating system files, it will then boot off the internal memory, but still be able to access the card.
It may also be able to store other content like voices, what exactly depends on the main software version (for example, as supplied, the 720 could not see audiobooks on the SD card. That was fixed in a software update).
The internal memory and the SD card are still seen as totally separate devices. When you connect an x20 model to a Windows PC, the computer assigns TWO new drive letters to it.
On the occasions where you HAVE to use Home, the first thing it asks is whether you want to work with the internal memory or the SD card.c
The reason I asked is that the POIs don't download from this site with CAB, TOC and VER Files.
Ha! I see the confusion I created! No these are the files I found in the tottom/downloads directory in "my documents" - I incorrectly thought that these were part of the download process. See I was thinking it was much more complex than it actually was.
Andy thanks for the info on the SD card. I may even use the device to play MPEGs if I can get the FM bit working.
Nope Bluetooth is not for me - I don't even own a mobile phone!
