Was in Best Buy tonight playing with a new TomTom 920t and a Magellan Maestro 4040. I was searching for a few different local places.
The Magellan had 4 of the 5 places I was looking for, and all 4 were shown with phone numbers.
The 920t had only 3 of the same 5, and only 2 phone numbers listed, and actually said the phone numbers were unavailable.
This was with a small pool of popular POIs, it is clear that the TomTom POI database is very weak for US places.
I am really trying to get excited about a pending x20 purchase, but am finding it harder and harder to actually pull the trigger on one.

Tom Tom are losing their way by trying to add all these extras. They should concentrate on functionality and allow the devices to use POIs, Add-ons, etc from outside suppliers. As Andy says, their UK POIs are rubbish and the PGPSW speed camera database is far superior to the TomTom one. But they persist with it, instead of making the function work properly, like getting the "Warn on Route" bit to do just that, instead of "Warn anywhere within crow flies plus a bit".
Tom Tom simply isn't big enough to handle all this POI stuff - they are relying on some outside sources, I presume, to provide them with the information, which they then have to incorporate into the devices. That means far too long a delay in updating the databases. You'd expect MapShare to have a big part to play in this, but we are finding in the UK that it doesn't work quite like the hype (to make only a very low key comment!). _________________ Dennis
