globalsat BC-307 help to beginner in over her head

Hi,

I just received a GlobalSat receiver no: BC-307 and have no idea what to do with it. I purchased it since I have a labtop and a pda that can use it. I would really like to get this thing working soon or return it. Can anyone help?

I have loaded the software onto my computer, an XP machine, and tried finding the device on two comms (3 and 4.. i think) but the machine couldn't find it. I tried cold starting it and nothing happened.

I need to know two things,
1) how does this thing work?
2) what maps should I use?

I figure if I can get the product to receive some feed I can use just about any map product out there, but I am not sure about that. You can also tell me I jumped to far on this one and I should just return the product if that is true. But I would like it to work.
