I drive to work in Sheffield, where the council are fond of imposing "no right turn" restrictions (and sometimes "no left turn") even though the road you can't turn into is two-way. Do sat-nav systems support this kind of restriction? If the database wasn't up to date, could they be programmed in manually?
Sheffield also has "tram gates", where only buses and trams are allowed through. Not sure if these are 24-hour or only operate at certain times. What's the deal with these? |

Can only speak for TomTom systems, but they certainly treat a "no entry" road differently from a "no left or right turn into this road from this direction". In fact the new "Mapshare" feature allows you to edit that information yourself and update your map.
I don't think any present Satnav can cope with time restricted entry though. |

The map data from TA and Navtec has turn restrictions, so a no right turn into a street will be recognised by the Satnav. However, as councils can change these in 15 minutes by putting up a sign, and it takes upto 2 years for changes to percolate through to the devices (see numerous discussions on this forum as to why), not all of these turn restrictions will be in your map data. As stated above, I believe Mapshare can be used to correct these errors.
Temperal data is not something the Satnav manufacturers have gotten into yet. (Theres an instance in Australia (Sydney I think), where a motorway onramp changes direction throughout the day - imagine the Satnav getting that one wrong.....) |
