i was trying to add a new speed camera file to my 510 but there wasn't enough room on the card, so i started to delete things i thought wern't needed. after that the tom tom would turn on but not recognise the sd card.
i've re-installed an old back up but now it turns on but says there are no availabe maps.
i've tried everything i can think of to sort it out but i'm not getting anywhere. any ideas anyone?
i've not even got the disc as it's at work |

There won't be any Maps on the Disc either.
Have you tried a Reset? _________________ Richard

Do you have a Day 1 Full Backup done with Explorer?
Always do a Backup if you ever want to change anything, add or remove, to the Unit. Look at it as a System Restore Point. _________________ Richard

The problem is, his Maps won't work on your Unit without a new Activation. This will then mess up your friends future need for an Activation, should it be needed. On a serious note, it's also against the conditions of the EULA.
How did you do the first Backup? HOME or Explorer?
In what way does it not recognise the Maps? _________________ Richard

i've borrowed a friends card and it works fine, although his card has a larger capacity than mine and i can't fit all his data on my card.
when i backed my original card i did it through tom tom home but thinking about it i'm not sure if it was the 510 that i backed up, it could of been the old tom tom brick sized thing.
do you or anyone know what the file is called that has the maps in. i'll probarbly just have to buy a bigger sd card and copy his card onto it. |

As Oldboy says above, this won't work...
Yes, his original card WILL work fine in your machine. A copy of it won't.
That's TomTom's software protection system at work. They don't want you copying and sharing maps, so any COPY of a map will need registering using the device code of your machine and the product code of the original map. If you register it to you, it won't bellong to him any more.
Your best bet is to take another look at your backups (and in fact your ENTIRE harddrive of your PC.
Look for a FOLDER (not a file) with the same name as your map. I don't have a 510, but it believe it would be something like "GB_plus_major_roads_of_WE". It will have lots of files in it.
You also say you migh not have made a backup of the 510 at all. In which case you might be able to find the map for the original machine and install that. It will be more out of date, but better than nothing. Again it will need to be re-registered to your new machine.
If you can't find it, you COULD try battling with TomTom and say that the original version of "Home" didn't make a FULL backup, so it lost your maps.
The moral of the story is - that first FULL backup needs to be made with Windows Explorer as per the FAQs at the top of this forum. |
