Battery charging

Perhaps someone has the answer to this fairly simple question.
When not in use for a while is it better to recharge from time to time via mains or is it ok to switch the unit off by the switch on the unit's base.

Keep it charging up

Charge him every 2 weeks then if you don't use him.
