Hi there,
Anyone have arecommendation for a in vehicle/ portable GPS that outputs 5v for an external antenna? I have a Garmin II+ that is acting up and needs replacement, but I need the 5volts to power up the GPS antennas I work on. Thanks in advance

Try the GARMIN GPS60 range of hand helds. It's a virtual replacement for the GPSII+. (I have both) You can even use the existing GPSII+ power/serial data lead (the funny cylindrical 4 pin block).

In addition you get USB and options in the range do colour or monochrome mapping if required. High spec devices have SiRF chipset.

I guess you have an old antenna (for use with II+) that needs 5v and you want to use that with your NEW GPS?

If so you are going in the wrong way.

No new GPS use BNC (what II+ uses) connector. They mostly use MCX with some using MMCX. And they output around 3-4v. If you still want to use your old antenna, Garmin Streetpilot (old) series do use the same BNC connector and they provide 5v.

I would forget your old antenna and get a new one for your new GPS. New antennas are much more efficient than your old one and are very cheap. Your old antenna may have cost you a bomb when you bought it. New one cost only a fraction.
