Just assuming that you were allowed.
If you fired up your tomtom on a Commercial flight would it pick up the satalites?
Would it show your position on the map??
Would it show your speed i.e 300mph??

I've turned on my TT while in flight. I had a window seat and had no trouble getting a satelite lock. It worked best using 'Browse Map' zoomed out a fair bit. The blue arrow showed our position. As the arrow moved off the edge of the map, I had to move the map or it would disappear. |

Yes, it will get a fix if you hold it against the window. It's easier to get a fix if the unit has had a fix within a few hours of you boarding the plane.
As BGF says, quite high speeds can be observed.
I think there is a video of a TomTom on youtube showing it going haywire trying to lock onto roads. Some units like the outdoors oriented Garmin ones actually show a compass with cross track error, course to steer, height, rate of climb/descent etc.
There have been quite emotive discussions on this forum regarding using GPS on planes. Some people think it will potentially interfere with navigation systems and endanger the aircraft and it's passengers, other people think it's completely harmless.
There is a list of airlines which officially allow GPS to be used on board:

I probably don't spend as much time on the forums as you then. |
