Not sure if anyone has picked up this yet but spotted it at gpspassion.

Looks like anyone who buys a product with old maps will have to pay for an update. The policy used to be that you could update your maps if you bought a product after the release date of the newest maps. _________________ Samsung Mega

Ah!
This explains why there was no "yellow sheet" with my new Garmin yesterday? |

Could mean one (or both) of two things
GARMIN beleive that all new products out there have current maps.
They are about to release a new version of the maps. _________________ Phil |

Spoke to Garmin today, and asked as to whether there were any map updates due, I was told that Europe V9 were the latest and were not due for V10 until the end of the year.
The maps are only updated once a year.
The link above refers to the US - North America City Navigator maps, to bring them in line with European maps.
At present the US is on V8 with V9 just coming in, it must be numbered differently from us in Europe. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Yes, they have been a "version" behind us for some while. Interestingly, "v9" is actually being given the version number "2008", and we should expect similar when the next European mapping comes out. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

No inside info, just down to experience
If people stop giving things away - they are generally introducing something they want you to pay for.
and..
If prices drop suddenly - there's a replacement on the horizon _________________ Phil |

Paul went on my garmin account fully expecting to pay for update.Went through the process and it came up with the i3 details with an original upgrade number that related to v7.I then went throughthe update process to obtain num for v9.Then a summary of what i wanted came up with the box for cost reading $00 so i cntinued and about a couple of minutes later i had an unlock code for v9at no cost.Maybe it is because i had not registered my unit until may of this year. |

Maybe. However i a post earlier this year someone else who bought their i3 around the same time as us (end of 2005) admitted they had entered that days date (March 2007) as the date of purchase and fraudulantly got a free upgrade. I entered the correct date and have to pay.
Somehow you're somewhere in between as you say you

and i have no reason to doubt that, but i'm a bit ****ed that i don't get a free update.
Oh well. |

The only other thing is can think of it....
as you were supplied with a unit with v7 maps you should have had a free upgrade to v8 (mine came with v8 are ready installed so no free upgrade needed) which you didn't use, hence the free upgrade to v9.
Which would be fair and right.... |
