Notes:

Supports Windows 2000 and later OS, including Windows Vista.
Supports Internet Explorer 6+ or Firefox 1.5+.
Mac support coming soon.
Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk.

Change History

Changes made from version 2.1.0.1 to 2.1.0.1:

Initial web release.

Instructions for using this software

Click on "Download" and choose to save the file to your computer.
Choose a location where you can easily locate the file by saving it to a location such as the "My Documents" folder or to "C:\".
Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file and double-click on it.
Once the installation is complete, you may delete the downloaded file.

System requirements

IBM-compatible PC running Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system and an available USB or Com 1, 2, 3, or 4 port.
PC Interface Cable for your GPS unit. The PC Interface Cable may be purchased through your local Garmin distributor or ordered direct from our Online Store.

Looks like a Browser Plugin to allow some sort of interface with the i3, but i can't find any information on it at all.

and then i strike gold- http://www.garmindeveloper.com/web/communicator-api-0.5/overview.html

Quote:
Overview
This JavaScript project allows access to Garmin GPS devices.

The JavaScript communicates with the Garmin browser plugin making it easy to transfer GPS device data such as points of interest, waypoints, tracks and routes.

Also from other pages on the site

Quote:
The Garmin Communicator Project is an (soon-to-be) open-source JavaScript library that allows developers access to Garmin GPS devices

Quote:
This framework supports:

Connecting to Garmin GPS devices using just a browser and a USB cable.
Exchanging track and location data in the GPX file format.
Receiving data asynchronously, AJAX style.

I suspect the plugin just gives your browser the communication function. Someone will still have to make an application that runs in a browser or a website that can communicate with it in order to use it.

Interesting - possibly Garmin developing a multi-platform interface to replace the existing ones?

Good googling btw

For info - Garmin had already written a Browser plugin for accessing their devices...the Zumo Route Sharing site makes use of it. I tried pilfering it, but it 'knows' it's not been referenced from Garmin.com and so refuses to play ball. That one is an Active X control though. Knowing Garmin, this is probably the work of a team that it unaware of the other's existence ;-)

could be similar to the google maps api - you get a specific key per website/domain and if someone uses the code elsewhere then it doesn't play.

Yes, it looks like the ActiveX version I stumbled upon, is actually their 'API wrapper' - and is keyed to the website.
