Hey there,

I had my old tomtom one stolen from the car last night, and thought it might be good opportunity to upgrade to a better model (obviously taking better care of it than to leave it in the glove box overnight), so i popped down to curry's and bartered them down to £290 for a 910 deluxe version.

First impressions look pretty good, apart from the lousy, pretty useless manual I wonder if anyone could clarify a few things for me.

1. Obviously the 910 comes with complete Europe and USA maps, but are these installed on the HD already, i've tried looking using the TomTom home software, and it seems to say they are on there, but cannot locate them when using the 910 itself. Do the map's automatically become active when you go to another continent? (i'm in the states 3 or 4 times a year, so i don't want to go over there and it not work.)

2. Is it usual for tomtom to include a 1 months free trial to their traffic plus service, as i remember, 1 was included with the tomtom one i previously had, but cannot find anything in the box for the 910. It would be nice to have a look at this service before i decide if i want to spend good money subscribing.

3. Is it possible to check what version map's are supplied with this unit? i just want to make sure i am up to date.

4. There seems to be things on the tomtom website spec's that it mentions that the 910 can do, but i can't find any mention of them in the manual or options, just small things that i don't really need or will ever use, but it's been bugging me a bit, like quote "Speeding alert: Alerts you that you’re speeding, even if you're not in navigation mode." & "Extensive preferences: From temperature (C/F) to air pressure (Pascal or Mbar), and more."

Thanks for any feedback, i'm sure some of the questions are obvious and i'm just not looking right ( i also did a search on these forums).

1. Tap the screen, tap Change preferences, go to the second screen (Third if you don't have extended menus shown), tap Manage maps, tap Switch map, choose the map you want to use.

2. Not sure. There was a free update to the safety cams for mine.

3. From the main screen, tap the Satellite status icon, the tap where it says the version number. You will get, among other things, the name and version of the map currently in use.

4. See 1. Have you enabled Show ALL menu options? If not, do so on the 3rd Preferences page.

1. Yes, all the Maps are loaded onto the Hard Drive. You have to manually change Maps in Change Preferences | Switch Maps (or Manage Maps). It depends if you have all the Menus showing.

2. I can't answer that one, as I never use it. Smile

3. Tap the Satellite Graphic in bottom Right Corner, then tap the small window that says version 6.xxx

This will bring up a screenful of information.

4. If you cannot see these Options, go to the last page of Change Preferences, and Select Show ALL menu options.

The Speed comes under Status Bar preferencs. Temperature/Air Pressure comes under Set Units.

The most important task is to do a FULL BACKUP first.

Hi, sorry to hear of your loss.

I'll have a go at your questions:

1. UK and Europe should be seamless, but you have to switch maps for the US. You do this in Preferences/Manage maps/Switch maps

(You might have to "Enable all menu options" first (Do this any way. You'll be missing a lot otherwise!)

2. Don't know

3. Tap the signal strength bars then tap the box middle right where it gives the software version to get a full page of info.

4. a. Speeding alert. There has always been an option in "Status Bar Preferences" to show your speed. This is just an addition to that so the display shows for example "65/70" where the first figure is your speed and the second is the speed limit for the road you are on. If you go above the limit by about 5mph thaose numbers turn red and start flashing.
Be aware that the speed limit data is part of the mapping and is often not there and is also quite often wrong. The flashing red is very hard to see too. Unfortunately it is all or nothing, you can't turn that bit off without turning off your speed display too.

4. b. I think these are just options for what units to use on the Weather display (part of the Traffic service)

EDIT: Doh! Beaten again Crying or Very sad

Look at this lot, all falling over themselves to be first to answer you.

Not ONE of them asked the sympathetic question - DID THE *****S GET YOUR BLACK DYKE MILLS BRASS BAND CD? They got mine Evil or Very Mad

Item 2, Traffic trial was included in an orange booklet "Tom Tom PLUS services", page 5.

Please, I beg you, do NOT go for their free cameras on page 6. They are NOT up to date and to get future updates you will have to subscribe a fortune (or at least, a lot more than from this site) and when you do get them updated, they'll be out of date, inaccurate and very incomplete.

I don't know where you'll be able to get a replacement Black Dyke Mills Band CD though.

Laughing Out Loud......thanks for the great responses guys, a big help, and as suspected i wasn't looking properly ( as usual too eager to look at the instructions and just wanna play).

Just one point, the maps that are supplied are v6.525?? but not, AFAIK, the latest v6.75 (even though the guy in the store said they were the latest version)....am i wrong? is it worth contacting tomtom ( for what it's worth from reading these forums)?

oh......and all the scrote chav got was a 2 year oldish tomtom, with a dodgeh battery and a packet of polo's. The fool left the £250 shades on the dashboard and the £2000 worth of tools in the boot (thank god)..........This'll give kick me a kick up the arse to take better care of things. Confused

That is the software version.

Did you find the page of info I pointed you to?

The first line is the Device No.

The second is the App Version - 6.525

The Fifth line will say Map:'Western_and_Central_Europe' v6xx.xxxx

That's your Map. ;)
